Our Philosophy

The intent of the Waco High School Girls’ Athletic Training Program is to provide the highest standard of health care possible for home and visiting student-athletes while also providing an educational environment for the development of student athletic trainers. While providing quality healthcare to the student athletes at Waco High School, our student athletic trainers obtain the knowledge base and skill development required to continue their services at the collegiate level. It is our goal that every one of our athletic training students continues on to college and pursues a degree in athletic training or whatever else they desire.

The staff athletic trainer responsible for the Girls’ Athletic Training Program is Jessica Haines, LAT, ATC. Jessica has been an athletic trainer at Waco High School since the Fall of 2007. Ms. Haines and her students are responsible for taking care of the following programs:

Boys’ Cross Country
Girls’ Cross Country

Volleyball
Boys’ Basketball
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ Soccer
Softball
Girls’ Track
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ Golf

What is an athletic trainer?

By definition:

  • An athletic trainer is a certified, health care professional who practices in the field of athletic training.
  • Athletic training is practiced by Athletic Trainers, healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.

This means we are responsible for “fixing” athletes when they are hurt.

An athletic training student should be a compassionate, hard working, dependable, and mature individual. They must also be willing and ready to learn new things. As an athletic training student they will be taught first aid and taping/wrapping techniques. They will also learn basic anatomy. Student athletic trainers are different from managers and more than just water girls or water boys.

As an athletic training student they are responsible for:

  • The filling of water bottles and coolers before practices and games
  • Basic first-aid
  • Necessary taping and wrapping techniques (under direct supervision of the athletic trainer)
  • Being my “extra” eyes and ears when there is not enough of me to go around.

The athletic training student will be an extension of me. We will work together to ensure the safety of the Waco High athletes.
